Machine-Ready Labels: 3-Inch Cores & Unwind Directions Guide
In the industrial world, precision isn't a luxury—it’s a requirement. One of the most technical aspects of [custom label printing] that often confuses new business owners is the configuration of the roll itself. You’ve spent weeks on your design, but if the final product doesn't fit your labeling machine, your production line in Edmonton or Vancouver comes to a grinding halt.
At our Unit 5 facility in Markham, we treat the "back end" of the label as seriously as the artwork. Here is why the 3-inch core and the unwind direction are the two most important specs you’ll ever choose.
The 3-Inch Core: The Canadian Industrial Standard
While desktop label printers might use 1-inch cores, almost all commercial-grade automatic applicators require a 3-inch (76mm) core. This size provides the structural integrity needed to handle the tension of high-speed machinery. If a roll is too flimsy, the liner can snap or the labels can drift, resulting in thousands of wasted units. Every roll label we produce at Custom Sticker Print follows this industrial standard, ensuring your packaging process is seamless.
The Mystery of Unwind Directions (Position 1-4)
If you are applying labels by hand, the direction doesn't matter. But the moment you load a roll into a machine, the Unwind Direction (also called the "Lead Edge") is critical.
-
Top Off First (Position 1): The top of your artwork comes off the roll first.
-
Bottom Off First (Position 2): The bottom leads the way.
-
Right Off First (Position 3): The right side leads.
-
Left Off First (Position 4): The left side leads.

Getting this wrong means your labels will be applied sideways or upside down on your bottles. This is a common mistake made by resellers who don't understand the machinery. Because we are a factory-direct partner, our technicians manually verify these requirements with you before our digital presses ever start.
Precision Finishing in Ontario
Our digital finishers don't just cut shapes; they manage the tension of the roll to prevent "tunneling" or "telescoping." Whether you need 1,000 labels for a seasonal craft beer or 50,000 for a cosmetic launch, we ensure every roll is wound with precision.
Don't leave your production to chance. Work with a manufacturer that speaks the language of your machinery.
